ROUGE & NOT WATERPROOF
With Julie Andrée T., when performance-installation encounters theatre the blend is unsettling and fascinating. This artist, whose iconoclastic approach is much appreciated both here and abroad, has dazzled audiences with these two hybrid works where dialogue, a series of actions and a mishmash of unusual images are gradually distilled into poetry. Disconcerting, moving and unclassifiable, these pieces deploy an astounding transformation of the body by means of a metamorphosis of the stage landscape.
In Not Waterproof, Julie Andrée T. plays with the codes of representation and refuses all semblance of character. She exchanges the dramatic text for writing based on action. Subjected to a series of ordeals, pulverized and dirtied, her body becomes a dreamscape. In exposing her vulnerability, she quietly conveys the impermanent and ephemeral nature of our lives.
Like an effervescent fraternal twin, Rouge also makes the body the vector of sudden poetic vistas, but this time by exploring chaos. A depiction in extreme monochrome, this constantly mutating piece takes shape in a frenzy of accumulation where repetition of the question “What colour is this?” serves as a veritable mantra. This captivating work is imbued with a beguiling madness and a search for the infinite.
