Festival TransAmériques today offered the first glimpse of its 20^th edition, which will take place from May 28 to June 11, 2026, announcing two major theatre shows. Vampyr, a stunning work by Chilean director Manuela Infante, will be performed at Maison Théâtre from May 29 to May 31. Querelle de Roberval, a stage adaptation of Kev Lambert’s ferocious novel by Quebec theatre’s rising star Olivier Arteau, will stop at Théâtre Jean-Duceppe, May 30 and 31.

Vampyr by Manuela Infante

Chile’s Manuela Infante is considered one of the most influential voices in contemporary Latin American theatre. In her latest work, she revisits the vampire myth with biting humour: Vampyr is an environmental satire in the form of a mockumentary about the impact of wind turbines on an endangered bat population. In a world that’s relentlessly exploited, sometimes even in the name of the green economy, the figure of the vampire reflects our insatiable hunger for resources. Replete with absurdist and philosophical undertones, Vampyr debunks fantasies of progress and eternal life.

Aiming for a potentially non-anthropocentric theatre, Infante creates eye-opening works that challenge the binary division of nature and culture and have been presented in around twenty countries in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. In 2019, she was the first Chilean director to be invited to Venice’s Biennale Teatro.

Querelle de Roberval by Olivier Arteau

In the heated environment of a sawmill strike, the handsome figure of Querelle fans the flames of desire and rage. For his first appearance at FTA, director Olivier Arteau adapts a raw and lyrical novel by Kev Lambert, with a soundtrack by Ballet Opéra Pantomime. Eleven performers, including Gabriel Lemire (recently celebrated in Olivier Choinière’s Mommy, le retour) as Querelle and Ariel Charest as Jézabel, enact a savage saga that explores the links between social violence and unbridled capitalism.

Theatre director Olivier Arteau, recipient of a Canada Council for the Arts John Hirsch Prize, was appointed artistic director of Théâtre du Trident, one of Quebec’s leading theatres, at the young age of 30. For the hugely ambitious Querelle de Roberval, he has set up a unique collaboration between theatres across Quebec and beyond. These include the Théâtre du Double signe in Sherbrooke, Théâtre du Tandem in Rouyn-Noranda, Théâtre La Rubrique in Jonquière, and the National Arts Centre’s French Theatre in Ottawa. FTA will be the final stop of a tour starting January 2026 that will bring the show to venues across the province.
