L’ORGIE DE LA TOLÉRANCE

Troubleyn | Jan Fabre

A demonic force who assails all strictures and opprobrium as he steadfastly probes the moods of bodies and the temper of the world, Jan Fabre has once again drawn his sword of ridicule.

Details

In L’orgie de la tolérance, the Flemish artist torpedoes the consumer animals we have become, wallowing in the sleek jelly of excessive normality. Nine dancers leap and bound like creatures possessed, in solos or as an ensemble, utterly enthralled as they cling to their sofas and shopping carts. Everything is normal, everything is for sale but the pleasure is fleeting, for this domestic theatre is insidiously imbued with an uncomfortable feeling of insecurity – the violence and barbarity of the world. In this grotesque sketch about liberalism and its perverse effects, Jan Fabre brings to light the profound emptiness of these corroded little lives that perhaps resemble ours. Seeing a piece by Jan Fabre is like being thrown into a battlefield where beauty has a close, disturbing relationship to cruelty. With his latest work, he continues his incessant pushing of limits, a process that leaves no one unscathed.
