So Far so Good

The writer Étienne Lepage, with the complicity of choreographer Frédérick Gravel, is back confronting human chaos. After Ainsi parlait… (FTA, 2013) the perceptive duo is exploring the anxiety of freefalling egos, the discomfort of fragile beings suddenly aware of their worst inner selves, curious to see just how far their instincts take them. In a world where the worst is almost sure to happen, it’s better to expect things to end badly.

A mischief-maker taking pot shots at delusive thinking, Lepage composes scenes presented by characters with keen insight and humour, revealing the obscure face of individuals who collapse into absurdity, overcome by the shame of their own verbosity. Shocking images abound, delivered by a team of agile, mocking performers. Portraits of nonchalant, smart but somewhat desperate thirty-somethings are presented in a series of raw, candid moments, comic situations and disconcerting reflections, all of it exposed in straightforward fashion with language dipped in acid. Defence and illustration of Murphy’s law.

An impetuous activist, a partisan of movements and ideas, Étienne Lepage made a splash as a playwright shortly after graduating from the National Theatre School of Canada with Rouge gueule. Created in 2009, the play drew attention for its raging tone and its ruthlessly precise language.

FTA audiences are very familiar with Frédérick Gravel, having experienced in 2009 the jolt of Gravel Works. Ironic and impertinent, the choreographer enjoys blurring boundaries between dance, theatre and performance art.
