ISRAEL GALVÁN

Incredibly adept at revivifying and renewing, the Spaniard Israel Galván bursts head first into flamenco tradition, taking the imaginary bull by the horns and stripping flamenco of its pretensions and affectations. Like an actor in a Greek tragedy, he is surrounded by a chorus of cantaores (singers) and musicians. The fiery dancer and choreographer makes his way into the arena in concentric circles and engages in an impassioned combat consisting of six “bullfighting” solo dances.

Details

With sinuous movement, this sensitive, vulnerable dancer responds to the flow of sensations emanating from the arena, establishing like the bullfighter a physical grace of action and reaction, conveying the impression that his very life is at risk. Dancing at the centre of the stage amidst images of the cantaor Enrique Morente bursting forth from a fervid audience to sing the raw passion of the crowd, Galván seeks not to illustrate the toreador’s combat but to observe the ritual attacks between man and beast in order to extract new substance for his art. Decidedly innovative and most certainly contemporary, Israel Galván exudes an aura of supreme liberty, a quality acquired at the cost of perfect mastery of flamenco culture and traditions.
