Catoblépas
Alice, a little girl who was once too fond of matches, discovers after twenty years in a psychiatric institution the child taken from her at birth. Between her and her son Robert is a nun devoted body and soul to protecting him from life and the influence of others. The two women claim maternity over this strange, fascinating beast, a creature as freakish as the mythical catoblepas.
They exchange insults and injuries, their focus being the maternal link, the taboo of incest and fear of the body, of sexuality and of death. The dazzling, breathless writing of Gaétan Soucy rakes up the soil of an original tragedy, unearthing the rhizomes of a collective unconsciousness. This tragedy of the imagination and outlook calls for a master of staging, and the encounter with Denis Marleau is no coincidence.
