Ce ne andiamo per non darvi altre preoccupazioni
(We Decided to Go because We Don’t Want to Be a Burden to You)
Directly addressing the audience, four actors conduct a compassionate inquiry into the debt debacle in Greece. A theatrical gem that gives rise to a flash of resistance.
Suicide as an Act of Resistance
At the height of the debacle in Greece, four retirees commit suicide so as not to be a burden to society. A tragic sign that is both desperate and altruistic, their gesture draws attention to the ravages that the debt crisis and austerity measures have on the vulnerable fringes of society. In a heartfelt address to the audience, Daria Deflorian and Antonio Tagliarini, passionate artists on the Italian independent theatre scene, embrace this troubling tale, down to its slightest tremors.
On an almost empty stage, four courageously vulnerable actors conduct with disarming simplicity a compassionate inquiry into the final moments of these four elderly women, exhausted by the imperatives of utility and success imposed by contemporary society. How to portray this political gesture onstage? How can art respond in the face of this crisis? The actors’ pure, direct style destabilizes the present as they reconstruct the touching drama and its disturbing context of chaos, poverty, social disintegration and lack of vision for the future. A gem of theatrical intelligence from which a flash of resistance emerges.
