Tambours sur la digue
This tale of a thousand and one breathtakingly beautiful moments, a raging river, drums in the night, all-powerful overlords and peasants caught up in the debacle is a legend with contemporary resonance. Human puppets carried at arm’s length by shadowy handlers unfold in a dance that accentuates their excessive humanity, fragility and ambiguity.
They act from within. To portray such splendours are a raised stage, silk curtains whose colours follow the rhythm of the story, a timeless music box, drums and some props to create blood, wind and fog. In an unwell world, Ariane Mnouchkine and the Théâtre du Soleil send forth a rare essence – joy.
