RICARDO III

SHAKESPEARE, ROLF & HEIDI ABDERHALDEN | MAPA TEATRO

As seductive as vice and as free as Molière’s Don Juan, who fears neither God nor the devil, this is a dark and fascinating Richard III. Through the excess and the monstrous actions of this hideous toad, Shakespeare helps us understand human behaviour, directing our gaze toward the victims of power, be they in Bosnia, Palestine, Iraq or Colombia.

Details

This is brought into focus by the dazzling theatre artists Heidi and Rolf Abderhalden, who live in a country undergoing total collapse and who experience defeat and destruction on a daily basis. This reworking of Shakespeare’s classic has been transposed into the blood-soaked mass grave of history. Their ceremonial Ricardo IIIreveals the many faces of this tyrant lusting for power, and the masks of hypocrisy he wears to achieve his goals. This “ ancient ” text is frightfully contemporary.
