Hamlet – Machine

Gilles Maheu

Müller brings back the “I ” in historical theatre. Words and images from the subconscious irrupt in the foreground, words and images that the theatre of historical consciousness had discarded in the name of rigour and science. Müller’s theatre is a theatre of terror, a theatre of nightmare.. gut theatre

Heiner Müller was born in 1929 in Eppendorf, Saxony. His first works were published in the 1950’s and in 1961 he was excluded from the Writers’ Union. Productions of his plays are bannad in the GDR, where he lives, and at times even their publication is forbidden. In the West, however, they are performed frequently.
