INCARNAT

LIA RODRIGUES

Inspired by Susan Sontag’s book Regarding the Pain of Others, Lia Rodrigues’ Incarnat is a piece presented in bright vivid red, a work that questions the nature of our relationship toward the suffering of others. A choreographer and founder of the Festival Panorama Rio Arte Dança, Lia Rodrigues has made her mark on the Brazilian stage with her political commitment and her work with the poor and the disadvantaged.

Details

Her company gives performances of her pieces (a mélange of the plastic arts, dance and performance art) in isolated, remote regions of Brazil. Like the essay that initially inspired the piece, Incarnat is a plea for involvement and commitment. Given the risk inherent in our era that frequent exposure to scenes of violence will lead to an indifference toward all sorts of brutality, Lia Rodrigues – incisive, almost furious and incredibly invigorating – demolishes our expedient convictions, bluntly questions our attitudes and positions, and forces us to look at ourselves and others as human, very human, beings.
