LIFE IS BUT A DREAM #1

PATRICIA ALLIO

Like Shakespeare, Patricia Allio believes that we are such stuff as dreams are made on. Based on the works of the American punk and queer writer Kathy Acker, she has created a dream object, a protean project that is part theatre, part concert and part film. Life is but a dream # 1 is freely adapted from the sharp audacity of Acker’s novel Blood and Guts in High School and enriched by material collected in New York City.

Details

A multidisciplinary artist, Allio prolongs the subversive spirit of the chic destroy icon of the alternative New York scene of the 1990s, who was renowned for her skilled manipulation of plagiarized texts and rewritings of classic novels. Set in a post-apocalyptic world marked by revolution, Allio’s performance is in constant mutation. The language of theatre is interspersed with images, as short films are an inherent part of the piece. In erasing the boundary between truth and fiction, in combining visual poetry and theatre and achieving a mutual fertilization between mythology and realism, the notion of genre becomes porous. Her performance art is dominated by hybridity, and in that respect Allio and Acker are blood sisters, with their onstage nuptials taking on an allure of a shameless wedding feast.
