Umwelt is a German word meaning environment, surroundings or subjective universe. In the human environment created by Maguy Marin, a never-ending circular dance that she choreographs to the sound of deafening music, an impressive swath of humanity is on parade. Swept along by an incessant wind, men and women move through repetitions, repeated movements and variations, stepping out from behind mirrors and moving, coming and going, appearing and disappearing in a constant to-ing and fro-ing, a perpetuum mobile, until all possibilities are exhausted.
Twenty-five years after May B, her memorable piece based on Beckett’s work, Maguy Marin takes inventory of capabilities, playing with the possible, composing and arranging, dissecting and distorting and reconstructing variations, successions and juxtapositions in an ongoing ebb and flow, creating a fugue performed on a decidedly not well-tempered clavier. She portrays our ephemeral existence, showing us that we are not built to last and inviting us to experience what we are capable of through transformation, as she herself is constantly doing. This significant artist is herself a fluid and changing construction composed of encounters and associations, adapting to the environment. From one work to another over the past thirty years, this architect of possible worlds has found in this sharing and openness the best way of being oneself.
